The pinoy-made short film “Gift of Life” is the only Filipino entry for this year’s prestigious Webby Awards that made it into the top 5 online commercials category, alongside efforts from Google, Microsoft, and other digital giants.

The two-and-half minute short film tells the story of a toy robot, Blitz, and a doll named Lily and their love for each other. Set on the set in a room that reminds of viewers of their childhood, the short film highlights how love and self-sacrifice triumphs over all.

The film was created by Energizer in partnership with Manikako, a Filipino non-profit organization that “offers free doll-making workshops to less fortunate Filipino children, helping them rediscover creativity, resourcefulness and environmental responsibility, values which can help them rise above poverty.”

The Webby awards can be compared to the Oscars for the web. The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. Established in 1996 during the Web’s infancy, The Webbys is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) — a 1,000+ member judging body that includes Executive Members comprised of leading Web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities, and Associate Members who are former Webby Award Winners and Nominees and other Internet professionals.

Manila based advertising agency TBWA/Santiago Mangada Puno worked with Revolver Studios to produce a film to support the children’s charity.

The film has attracted numerous accolades and awards since it went live early last year, which includes nods from design sites such as Creativity Online and FWA. The short film has also received awards from big international advertising festivals such as AdFest in Thailand and Spikes in Singapore, and has won gold for Cinematography and silver for Viral categories from the Kidlat awards last year.

“Gift of Life” is directed by industry veteran A/F Benaza of Revolver studios. According to an interview, Benaza said that he was determined to shoot the short film as a sequence of dioramas without dialouge or animations to tell a heartwarming story that could still capture the hearts of viewers.

Benaza said “Technology sometimes desensitises us to emotion. What I wanted to do was literally burn sentimental images into the viewer’s memory – static moments that are universal to everyone and anyone in the world regardless of age, race, or culture.”
