5 Embarrassing Live TV Mistakes

Live television is fun and exciting because anything can happen, but it can also go wrong very quickly. From physical mishaps, verbal slip-ups, and even closed captioning mistakes, there’s always a wide array of mistakes being broadcast directly from TV studios into our homes. Let’s look at some of the most embarrassing live tv flubs.

1. Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunction

One of the most infamous live tv mistakes ever was Janet Jackson’s outrageous “wardrobe malfunction” at Super Bowl XXXVIII.
MTV produced the halftime show that year for CBS. The story goes that while Janet Jackson was performing a song with Justin Timberlake, he ripped away her top to reveal a bare breast with a metallic ‘nipple shield.’ Although Ms. Jackson’s breast was only exposed for about half a second, it led to one of the largest FCC fines ever imposed, over $500,000. Consequently, MTV also lost their contract to produce any future Super Bowl halftime shows.

2. Ashlee Simpson Caught Lipsyncing On Saturday Night Live

In 2004, teen pop star Ashlee Simpson was scheduled to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Her first performance of the night was her hit song, “Pieces of Me.”
She was trying to perform a different song, but her band, apparently confused, launched into the number they had already performed.

Simpson and her publicist blamed the incident on a throat problem she developed in rehearsal. However, Lorne Michaels was very upset, and Simpson’s career didn’t last very long after the incident.

3. Kansas City Royals Closed-Captioning Mistake

While most closed captioning companiesstrive to provide speedy and accurate captions, there are bound to be mistakes. One of the funniest instances of a captioning mistake happened when the Texas Rangers played the Kansas City Royals.

FOX Sports Kansas City was captioning on a 2013 Game, when the Rangers’ Designated Hitter Jeff Baker was called in to pinch hit for David Murphy in the top of the 10th inning and struck out. The closed captioning service not only got Murphy’s name wrong (calling him “Maxwell”), they also referred to him as a “pimp hitter.” While any baseball fan knows that they meant “pinch hitter,” it was extra embarrassing, considering Murphy struck out.

4. Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe Mix-Up

This is the most recent event on the list. The comedian and Family Feud host slipped up and read the wrong name for Miss Universe 2015. He accidentally read the name of Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, instead of the judges’ choice, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

Harvey received a lot of social media flak for this mishap, and Miss Colombia herself referred to the incident as “embarrassing for her whole country.”

Ever the joker, Steve Harvey tried to laugh off his unfortunate mistake with an Instagram post on Christmas that read, “Happy Easter, y’all.”

5. Jennifer Lawrence Trips and Falls at The Oscars

Being one of Hollywood’s most successful actresses doesn’t protect you from the hazards of live television. During the 2013 Oscar ceremony, Jennifer Lawrence learned this lesson the hard way.

It was a night of mixed blessings for Lawrence, when she won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Silver Linings Playbook.” Unfortunately, Lawrence must have been distracted by the honor she was receiving. As she ascended the stairs, she tripped on her strapless Dior gown and fell down. She hung her head in her hands momentarily, but then gracefully proceeded to smile and give her acceptance speech. Like they say, there’s a silver lining in every cloud.

These have been 5 of the most embarrassing live TV mistakes of recent times. You can bet that as long as live television exists, there will continue to be new and funny mistakes.
