An electric-powered motorbike that can accelerate from zero to 100kph in just  4.5 seconds – as fast as a Porsche 911 car – was at Masdar yesterday as part of  a UAE-wide tour.

The Zerotracer fully enclosed bike, designed by the Swiss engineering company  Designwerk, has a top speed of 240kph and can travel 300 kilometres on a single  charge.

It was shown to students and the faculty at the Masdar Institute of Science  and Technology.

“The values of environmental stewardship, innovation and entrepreneurship  that inspired the designers of the Zerotracer are the same values that drive the  students and faculty at Masdar Institute,” said Naser Al Marzouqi, head of  facilities management at Masdar City.

“Innovations such as those found in the Zerotracer are necessary to advance  sustainable transportation technologies and make them more accessible.”

The Zerotracer set a record for distance covered by an electric vehicle in  February last year by travelling 30,000km in 80 days as part of the Zero  Emission Race.

The race featured four zero-emission vehicles and the route took teams  through Asia, Africa, Europe and North America.

Tobias Wuelser, one of the designers of the Zerotracer, said Abu Dhabi was a  leader in renewable energy and sustainability so the city was a good fit for the  bike.

“The research and innovations in clean technology at Masdar are laying the  foundation for a more sustainable future,” he said.

The motorcycle will be on display at the sixth World Future Energy Summit  this weekend, which runs alongside Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the largest  gathering on sustainability ever held in the Middle East.
