It was a display of big power unity on Iran and the country’s suspected research into atomic bombs. The 35-nation board of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA censured Tehran for defying international demands to curb uranium enrichment.

There was a procedural hold up at the meeting in Vienna when South Africa, like Iran a non aligned member of mainly developing nations proposed a change to the resolution. A compromise was reached and it was passed.

“Resolutions is not a way for the resolution of Iran’s nuclear issue. It will only complicate the situation and jeopardise the cooperative environment which we desperately need to continue our work,” said Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s Ambassador to the IAEA

The censure comes days after Israel ramped up threats to attack its arch-enemy. Only Cuba voted against the resolution while three countries including Egypt, its reported abstained.

The IAEA has tried to agree a structured approach on how to carry out its enquiry but has said its lack of progress is, “frustrating”.
