Riot police have launched a fresh assault on Kiev’s Independence Square just hours after talks broke down between the President and his opponents.

The latest move comes after at least 21 people died on Tuesday in the worst day of fighting since the nationwide demonstrations began in November.

According to reports 14 protesters have been killed and seven police officers.

Talks broke down on Tuesday night after the Ukranian President refused to call off the police assault on the protest camp in the country’s capital.

Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko, said: “I am very unhappy because it was no discussion and the President doesn’t want to listen to the opposition.

“They don’t want to listen, it’s just one way and the opposition and all protesters have to stop protests.

“But right now it’s very important to make a break and not fight any more.”

In an address to the nation President Viktor Yanukovych said anti-government protesters had “crossed the limits” by taking to the streets to try to oust him from power.

“The leaders of the opposition have disregarded the principle of democracy according to which we obtain power through elections and not on the street.”

Thousands of riot police used water cannon and stun grenades against protesters during Tuesday’s clashes.
