Dubai: UAE-based Pakistani swimmer Lianna Swan broke two national records and one personal best over five events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, this weekend. The 17-year-old Bahraini-born Hamilton Aquatics and Jumairah College student re-set her existing national record in the 50 metre breaststroke in a time of 35.72 on Thursday, finishing third out of eight swimmers in heat two and 24th out of 35 competitors overall.

She then followed it up with a personal best in the 50 metre freestyle on Friday with a time of 29.10 to finish sixth out of eight swimmers in heat three and 45th out of 57 overall. On Sunday, she started the first of three races by resetting another of her own national records in the 100 metre freestyle in a time of 1:03.32 to finish sixth out of eight swimmers and 36th out of 45 overall.

But tiredness caught up with Lianna, who went on to narrowly miss out on national records in both the 200 metre individual medley and 100 metre breaststroke, both on Sunday morning. Lianna finished second out of three in heat one of the 200 individual medley finishing 23rd out of 24th overall with a time of 2:36.19. She also finished first out of six in heat one of the 100 metre breaststroke finishing 24th out of 30 with a time of 1:20.39.

Neither, Lianna, her mother Nadia or her coach Chris Tidey, could comment on Sunday after the Pakistan Swimming Federation issued a media blackout. However, despite failing to qualify to the semi-finals in any of her events, Lianna will be happy to have achieved her pre-event target of breaking national records and personal bests.
