STICK TO SCREENS

What is screen? Is it something where pictures or many other things can be projected? or is it something to get people glued? Well, if first option is picked then it is right to call it so, it can be something where anything still or moving can be watched or can be directed in any position like in games. If second option is picked then that is not wrong at all rather it is giving another direction, route where there is no way to return back or it is harder enough to look back. What are those screens which is making way tough and easy at the same time? Easy in a sense that it is making life entertaining and giving different opportunities to kill time, and tough because it is making people adhere to it that their life just revolves around those screens. These are none other than constant evolutions of technology specifically screen devices like iphones, ipads, laptops, tablets and so on. Telephones which were once just for phone calls now turned the shape of mini phones or mobile phones modified further as iphones and ipads. Larger computer screens turned into mini screens which can be move anywhere called laptops. Tablet which was once just for recovery is not just a medicine instead now it makes a person need a medicine.

Stick to the screen is a common complain of mothers. Children just find no strength to detach themselves from this artifact. Further when they grow up, why they failed in their actual aim? Why they are becoming machines? It is because when studying their mind is just distracted towards phone, by thoughts that there might be a text or any notification, they check their phone again and again. It is to extreme in some case like even when people wake up in the night, they used to check their phone, they would do dinner, check their phone, would go out with family, check their phone in fact would not go anywhere without it. People are obsessed to it. This all is called screen addiction which is not actually noticed because it is culturally accepted to use phone anytime, anywhere.

If it is narrowed down then this addiction is mainly due to social media obsession like facebook, viber, instagram, whatsapp or any other social media venue and people keep a check at every second. It appears that this obsession is due to the idea that people are using their technology for a combination of gaining some pleasure and from avoiding anxiety about not knowing what is going on at every moment on every electronic communication platform including social media.

This obsession has very negative impact on the psychological health like movies which are watched before bedtime on LED screens having blue light interferes with the sleep hormone melatonin, resulting in sleep deprivation which is a common complain now a day. Moreover, different varieties of screen time affects how we think, learn, attend, form memories, and retrieve them. It has made thinking shallower than they once were. It has affect reading comprehension which is the ability to form a coherent sentence. A question arises that whether screen time will be the death of a good psychological health and ultimately of us.
