President Karzai wants lawmakers to attend NSC meetings

KABUL: From now on, parliamentarians will be invited to National Security Council (NSC) meetings to ensure better coordination on security issues, the Presidential Palace said on Sunday.

The decision came at an NSC meeting, chaired by President Hamid Karzai, who directed the authorities concerned to ensure the participation of Wolesi and Meshrano Jirga members in future sessions.

National security and political issues, the regional situation and possible threats in border areas came up for discussion, a statement from Karzai’s office said.

Defence Minister Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi briefed the participants on Afghan soldiers’ deployment to the border region. Military deployment to the Gilan district of Paktia and Daulat Shah town of Laghman also figured at the meeting.

First Vice-President Mohammad Qasim Fahim, the lower house speaker, the Senate chairman and heads of parliamentary panels on defence and foreign relations also attended the session
