President Gül’s followers on Instagram skyrocket in first month

President Abullah Gül, well known for his active use of social media, has reached over 42,000 followers on the photo-sharing website Instagram in the few weeks he has been a member.

The president is already an active user of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, and has now begun to share photos on Instagram, most of which were taken by the staff of the presidential palace; however, the president will reportedly soon share photos he took himself. In his first week on Instagram, 22,000 people began to follow Gül’s account, cbabdullahgul.

President Gül will also meet with well-known digital and social media names at the presidential residence, Çankaya palace, on Tuesday to exchange views on online journalism and social media in Turkey. Invitees include ?smail Hakk? Polat from the department of new media at Kadir Has University; ntvmsnbc.com Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Ye?iltepe; Habertürk columnist Rah?an Gül?an; and Turkish Twitter phenomenon Hakim Türkmen, who is known by his screen name “beyinsiz adam” (the brainless man).

In a bid to revive the traditional “Çankaya table” — first established by the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk — and host people from all walks of life, Gül has invited well-known people from various professions to the presidential palace since he was elected president in 2007.
