Tunisian Olympic swimmer Oussama Mellouli has withdrawn from the 400 meter medley. Yesterday, July 28, Mellouli was supposed to compete, but instead he chose to withdraw due to the effects of an old injury.
According to his Facebook page, the “human fish” followed the medical advice of his doctor, who advised him to tone down the pace of workouts in order to avoid compromising his chances of winning other, larger events. Mellouli has suffered from a shoulder injury for some time, so in order to be fit for the 1500 meter freestyle – his favorite race – and the 10 km open water marathon, the swimmer decided not to compete in the 400 meter medley.
Mellouli will compete on August 3 in the 1500 meter freestyle.
Mellouli became the first African male to win gold in an individual swimming event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He is the only Tunisian gold medalist competing in this year’s games in London.
