Department of State, United States of America (USA), has finally designated Abubakar Shekau, Abubakar Adam Kambar, and Khalid al-Barnawi who are the leaders of Boko Haram as specially designated global terrorists under section 1(b) of Executive Order 13224.
According to a statement made available to our correspondent in New York, yesterday, the Department said, Shekau is the most visible leader of the Nigeria-based militant group, Boko Haram.
The statement added that Khalid al-Barnawi and Abubakar Adam Kambar have ties to Boko Haram and have close links to al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organisation.
“Under Shekau’s leadership, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks in northern Nigeria, its primary area of operation. In the last 18 months, Boko Haram or associated militants have killed more than 1,000 people”
Meanwhile, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) yesterday implored the United States Government to reconsider its plan to classify Boko Haram as terrorist group and thread with caution, saying the islamic extremist group were only engaged in a mere guerilla warfare.
