In Pakistan we are seeing a tremendous growth in hunger, poverty, corruption and mismanagement. We can also clearly see a great development in the technology of communication ie: cellular technology and private media channels. But these two cultural phenomena appear to be developing almost in defiance of one another…a little like close but estranged siblings!
We now have more than 80 private channels presenting news and other programs in Urdu and all other local languages . These media channels have become a household feature and exert a tremendous influence over the consumers.
Although it can still be argued that this huge growth in media access has brought some positive changes, that is not the point in this article. I need to talk about bad habits and tastes that these TV channels are developing.
Due to nonstop news feeds we all think that there is not a single good thing happening in the country. And news channels make every second person addicted to politics. Now everyone is talking about politics. In any public place, bus or train station you will find people talking about politics.
On TV every one loves to watch talk shows. Talk shows are the most watched TV program in the country and ordinary people consider the anchors of these talk shows heroes who can do anything. Coming generations will forget about the true heroes of the nation but will remember only the anchors of these kinds of shows.
Another change that we are observing is a kind of “forced culture”… except for the news shows if you go through the dramas of these private channels you will find they are showing a lifestyle and culture which is Indian more than Pakistan or Muslim.
There seems to be a race in all these channels regarding who will break the news first and in these races many times the news sounds a predication which after some time is confirmed wrong.
One thing that I personally hate is commercials. After each minute you will see a commercial of some product which encourages you to buy this and that. The audience has no option to avoid this hammering and these TV channels bring these commercials inside your home without any prior permission. Maybe one day governments will create some kind of regulations which allow the audience to block these commercials or at least force the TV channels to ask for permission to bring these commercials into someone’s home.
With the passage of time we will see more TV channels. But more TV channels mean a very powerful “free” media empire and one can easily predict that in the future there will be no privacy. We can imagine these private TV channels searching people like dogs and the next day we will see our dinner or breakfast or married couples fighting on morning shows or in news alerts…
