RESEARCHERS are working with renowned physicist Stephen Hawking on a way to “hack” into his formidable brain before he loses the ability to communicate entirely.

Scientists at Stanford University in the US are developing the device known as an “iBrain” which lets users communicate through their brain waves.

“We’d like to find a way to bypass his body, pretty much hack his brain,” lead researcher Professor Phillip Low told The (London) Telegraph.

“This is very exciting for us because it allows us to have a window into the brain. We’re building technology that will allow humanity to have access to the human brain for the first time.”

The device is a headband fitted with neurotransmitters which transform brain waves into words and sentences.

Hawking, who wrote the bestseller A Brief History of Time, lost the ability to speak more than 30 years ago after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

His current computer-generated voice is famous throughout pop culture through his documentary TV work but his condition is deteriorating.

Prof Low said he hoped the device could also be used to diagnose autism and treat sleep disorders.
