HEADSCARF BAN LIFTED IN GENT, BELGIUM

Thousands of people signed a petition against the regulation banning booth staff from wearing headscarves.

 

More than 10 thousand people signed a petition against the regulation of the municipality of Gent, which bans people working at the booths from wearing headscarves.

The ban, which was introduced back in 2007 was put to vote on Monday at the Municipal Assembly and was finally overturned.

29 of the total of 51 members of the Municipal Assembly voted against the ban.

The petition campaign was led by Minderhedenforum – an NGO for minorities and other Turkish and Muslim NGOs.

18 Assembly members made a speech about the ban and in the ensuing vote, all members of the Socialists and Greens Party voted against the ban. 3 of the 4 assembly members from Fleming MP Veli YĆ¼ksel’s Christian Democrats also voted against the ban.

On the other hand, third coalition party Liberals and nationalist New Fleming Alliance and far-right Vlaams Belang voted in favor of the ban.
