(NEWSER) – Game of Thrones fans are definitely getting a prequel, according to HBO—although it may not be the one they were expecting. HBO president of programming Casey Bloys confirmed Tuesday that the network had ordered the series House of the Dragon, which will be set around 300 years before the original series, the BBC reports. “It tells the story of House Targaryen and the early days of Westeros,” Bloys said at a launch event for the HBO Max streaming service. Hours before the announcement, outlets including Deadline reported that another prequel written by Jane Goldman starring Naomi Watts had been canceled.
The Goldman prequel, set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, encountered difficulties including a poorly received pilot and issues while filming in Northern Ireland over the summer, according to Deadline. HBO hasn’t confirmed that the prequel is dead, but sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that Goldman has informed cast and crew members of the development. HBO Max will launch in May next year and House of the Dragon, which is being co-produced by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, Ryan Condal, and Miguel Sapochnik, is certain to be a major draw, though HBO has not announced when it will air. .. see more
