BERLIN — Germany pledged nearly $7 billion to care for the hundreds of thousands of refugees entering the country and France said it would welcome 24,000 refugees as Europe on Monday stepped up efforts to deal with its migration crisis.
The vow Sunday by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition government followed late night talks in Berlin about how to support an unprecedented influx of asylum seekers this year.
Up to 800,000 migrants are expected by the end of the year. Many are fleeing war and persecution in places like Syria, Iraq and Eritrea.
Over the weekend, thousands of people from Syria, Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world crossed into Germany and Austria — many on foot, after trains were cancelled — after spending days effectively marooned in Hungary, which would not let them leave amid confusion over the European Union’s migration policy… see more
