More than half of the motorists on a list of top traffic offenders in Dubai so far this year are Emirati.

A total of 2,849 violations, equivalent to Dh851,370 in fines, have been issued to 29 UAE nationals, say officials at the Dubai Traffic Department.

A Bengali woman tops the list of 44 people with 204 violations and Dh201,000 in fines. An Indian motorist came second with 148 violations and more than Dh137,000 in fines.

Of the 29 Emiratis, 20 have committed to settling their traffic fines. A total of Dh1,326,750 in fines remains unsettled by motorists on the list.

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, director of Dubai Traffic Department, said an investigation team is working to track down the top violators in Dubai to compel them to pay their fines.

He explained the team, which works undercover, can impound cars with expired registrations in coordination with the Roads and Transport Authority. Motorists with more than Dh10,000 in fines are contacted by SMS.

Maj Gen Al Zafeen said an Iraqi motorist is ranked third on the list with 75 violations and Dh136,300 in fines. The fourth is an Emirati with 104 violations and Dh121,320 in fines.

A female Emirati motorist is fifth with 76 violations and Dh117,220 in fines. In seventh place is a male Emirati with 122 violations and Dh92,700 in fines.

Maj Gen Al Zafeen said the 6 female motorists that made the list were responsible for 673 violations, equivalent to Dh409,100 in fines.

He attributed the accumulation of fines to motorists failing to regularly check their traffic record, not settling outstanding fines in due time or being late in renewing licences.

He explained that the traffic department has devised a new system to pay fines in easy instalments calculated in line with people’s incomes.
