A Civil Guard investigation into the death of an 88-year-old British man is focusing on the residence where he was living, and which may not have been licensed. The people in charge of the home apparently told the officers that they just rented out the rooms in two flats which had been turned into one.
Some neighbours raised the alarm on Wednesday, phoning the Civil Guard to report that someone living on their development had died. Officers went to the building and found the body on a bed, covered in a white sheet.
Investigating further, and according to SUR sources, they found another elderly man in a very poor state of health, while in the adjoining flat there were two women, one of whom had a broken hip and the other was apparently in good health. An ambulance was called and took the two infirm occupants to hospital. All were of British origin.
Judicial police were called to the scene and found a certificate signed by a doctor from a health centre, revealing that the death had actually occurred on Tuesday.
The body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine on Wednesday evening where a postmortem examination was due to take place on Thursday.
Inside the building, officers found a board with written notes, thought to refer to the medication each of the elderly inhabitants had to take. This sparked the investigations as to whether the building was operating as an old people’s home, despite having no signs indicating this outside.
Officers identified other British citizens, one of whom was apparently cooking for the elderly residents when they arrived. The investigation remains open.
SUR was able to confirm on Thursday that the British man who died had been found a place to live by Age Concern in Estepona. He had previously been living in La Línea where apparently he was known to the social services department.
Eileen Dry, President of Age Concern, said that to the best of her knowledge the arrangement was legal. The man’s family had been told of his death but had been unable to come to Spain.
