ANTHONY Mundine has labelled Daniel Geale a “glorified amateur” who would never have won two world titles on German soil without the influence of his US promoter Gary Shaw.
In a stunning attack on the IBF middleweight champion, Mundine suggested it was Shaw’s “influence” that saw Geale awarded split decision victories of hometown world champions Sebastian Sylvester and Felix Sturm.
The outspoken fighter described both results as “questionable” before adding he would’ve also been granted – and won – both world titles bouts had Shaw been in his corner.
“Because Sturm and Sylvester are robots,’’ Mundine fired. “They haven’t got hands like me, haven’t got feet like me. I’ll hurt Daniel more in our fight than both those guys did.”
Mundine also again took swipes at Geale’s Aboriginality, credibility, marketability and, on one rare occasion where the champ got a word in, shouted “is that Lauryn Eagle talkin’ … it sounds like someone’s voice is about to break”.
And so it went for most of the press conference: Mundine shouting while Geale sat quietly and listened to white noise.
“He’s a glorified amateur,’’ Mundine hollered. “This is not about how many punches you can throw, it’s about how you hit and be hit. It’s professional boxing and I’m gonna show him how it’s done.
“I’m gonna outbox him, outfox him and outfight him. Daniel Geale ain’t me. I told him he was going to be world champion if I wasn’t here. This boy ain’t on my level and I’m gonna take his belt again.”
Eventually, Geale broke his silence to say: “If this fight was about who talks the most, sh*t then, yeah, Anthony wins.
“When we went to Germany, everyone expected us to come back with nothing. But we went out there and did what no one else in Australia has done.
“So I know Anthony’s just trying to get into my head. You can see it a mile off. He’s just trying to distract me because that’s what he does.”
Shaw also laughed off claims his influence had earned Geale two world titles – “If it had, I’d be asking for a pay rise” – and said Mundine was simply making excuses for his impending loss to a fighter set to dethrone Jeff Fenech as Australia’s greatest.
“Anthony Mundine is going to pay for all his comments about Daniel Geale, his family and his heritage,’’ Shaw said, turning to the controversial fighter as he spoke.
“So don’t be late this Wednesday night, Anthony … I may even pick you up myself, just to make sure you go.”
