West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has set a new record for the fastest ever century – off just 30 balls.

The batsman smashed his hundred on the way to 175 not out, which is itself the highest ever innings in the Twenty20 form of the game.

His total for Royal Challengers Bangalore during the Indian Premier League match against Pune Warriors featured 17 sixes and 13 fours off just 66 deliveries.

Pune captain Aaron Finch watched helplessly as the 33-year-old Jamaican swatted the bowlers to all parts of the ground with some of the sixes flying out of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

He told ITV4 after the innings: “I’m lost for words. It was just one of those days. It’s a good wicket and I started well.

“I got a good total. I can’t say it’s a decent total – it’s a good total.

“All I had for breakfast this morning was a plain omelette, two pancakes and a hot chocolate.”

Gayle’s 30-ball century beat the 34-ball hundred scored by Australian Andrew Symonds for Kent against Middlesex in 2004.

The left-hander’s highest individual score in a Twenty20 game saw him better the 158 scored by the previous record-holder, New Zealander Brendon McCullum’s.

Pakistani Shahid Afridi holds the record of fastest international century in the 50-over format (37 balls), while South African Richard Richard Levi (45 balls) has made the quickest international T20 hundred.
