Following the report on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s approval to shoot down unresponsive foreign drones entering the country’s airspace, China warned Japan on Tuesday that it will resolutely respond to any external provocation. Beijing also warned Tokyo for “playing-up” the tension between the East Asian neighbours.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, “Due to historical reasons, Japan’s political moves in the military and security fields have always received high attention from its Asian neighbors and the international community.” It seems that Hua was recalling how Japan used the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere” as a platform that eventually led to imperial rule in East Asia. “For some time, Japan has been deliberately playing up the so-called external threat and ratcheting up tension and confrontation between regional countries and using that as an excuse for constant military build-up.”

With cynicism towards Japan, Hua said that China cannot but “be on high alert to Japan’s real intent.” As the Senkaku Islands continue to serve as one of the core reasons of disputes between the Asian neighbours, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman reminded that the role of the Diaoyus, their name for the uninhabited islets, to China. “I want to reiterate that the Diaoyu Islands are an integral part of China’s territory,” she said. She also reminded that China “will resolutely respond to any external provocation.”
