Brazil has begun a seven-day period of national mourning for Oscar Niemeyer.

A military guard for his coffin in 19th-century dress uniforms made a striking contrast with the architect’s penultimate resting place; a building of his own design, the Planalto palace.

Here the people of Brasilia and beyond will pay homage to the man, surrounded by his creations in every direction they look.

Tributes and flowers have been pouring in from all over the country, transforming the palacio.

Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff was the first to pay homage; this is her office. And among her first duties for what is likely to be a busy seven days was receiving the body alongside Niemeyer’s widow, Vera Lucia.

Tributes and flowers have been pouring in from all over the country.

Later today the body is taken to Rio, Niemeyer’s final resting place, for a private homage and family funeral.
