Experts in Germany are investigating whether what appears to be a North African mummy, found in an attic by a 10-year-old boy, it was reported on Thursday.

The youngster discovered an old chest in which there was a mummy and a death mask, along with other artefacts, in a dark corner of the attic of his block of flats in Diepholz, Lower Saxony.

The boy had only found the chest after the roof had started to leak and he snuck up to have a look around, finding it behind stacks of spare tiles.

After alerting historians of the find, the father of the boy – Lutz Wolfgang Kettler – remembered that when he was a boy in the 1950s, his own father had acquired a chest while travelling in North Africa and had it shipped back to Germany.

Although he said on Friday that he thought it was “indisputable that they are replicas” the artefacts have been taken to experts in Berlin to be examined, as an air of uncertainty remains around the mummy.

“The only thing to do is X-ray it,” said Kettler. He added that he did not know where his father had been exactly in North Africa, nor whether he had visited Egypt.

His father, the boy’s grandfather, had never spoked about the chest in the attic, he said.

“It’s a mystery,” said Kettler.
