Lyon – First Gérard Depardieu decided to renounce his French citizenship over taxes, and now holds a Russian passport. Now Brigitte Bardot is also threatening to move to Russia, over two elephants in danger of being euthanized.
France is rapidly losing some of its most famous movie stars. First it was Gérard Depardieu, who renounced his French citizenship over tax issues in the country, and later received a passport from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Now 78-year-old Brigitte Bardot, sex symbol of the 1960’s and movie star of note, turned animal rights’ activist, is also threatening to apply for Russian citizenship, if French authorities euthanize a pair of sick elephants in a zoo in Lyon, France.
Bardot, a veteran animal rights campaigner, said in a statement posted on her foundation’s website, “If those people able to do something are cowardly and impudent enough to kill the two elephants, Baby and Népal, despite numerous proposals to save them sent by my Foundation known for its public utility, then I have decided to ask for Russian nationality in order to escape this country which has become nothing but a pet cemetery.”
On Sunday around 200 people made a human chain in the Tete d’Or zoo in Lyon, calling for a reprieve for the two elephants. The crowd chanted “Justice for the elephants,” as they surrounded the cage in which Baby and Népal live.
Both elephants face being euthanized, as they have been diagnosed with tuberculosis and are considered a threat to the health of other animals and also visitors to the zoo.
While authorities had ordered the elephants to be put to sleep in December, an outcry resulted in them being granted a temporary reprieve over the Christmas period.
Now Bardot is insisting that the elephants are permanently reprieved, and sent to her Foundation for treatment. If this doesn’t happen, she is packing her suitcases for Russia.
Bardot’s announcement comes just one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to one of France’s best-known actors, 64-year-old Gérard Depardieu. Depardieu is reportedly very popular in Russia and one of his latest roles was the most mysterious and dark figure in Russian history, Grigory Rasputin.
