Apple has been ordered to pay $234m (£152m) in damages after incorporating a university’s microchip technology into iPhones and iPads without permission.
But the computing giant is vowing to appeal the multimillion-dollar award to the University of Wisconsin-Madison – and has repeatedly denied infringing any patent.
A jury has ruled the A7, A8 and A8X processors found in the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus had violated patented microchip technology which can extend a device’s battery life by two hours.
Although the payout is about $165m (£107m) less than the university’s lawyers had demanded, there were still jubilant scenes in the courtroom after the verdict was announced.
Apple is now bracing itself for a second lawsuit, as the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) – the university’s non-profit arm – targets the company’s newest chips which can be found in the iPad Pro, as well as the iPhone 6s and 6 Plus… see more
