Novak Djokovic turned on the style to claim his fourth Australian Open title, after coming from a set down to see off a shattered Andy Murray in Melbourne.

The world number three chased down every ball, despite being in obvious discomfort after his gruelling five set semi-final with Roger Federer, but there was no let-up from Djokovic and he completed a 6-7 (2/7) 7-6 (7/3) 6-3 6-2 victory in three hours and 40 minutes.

The Brit took full advantage of some lacklustre play from the number one seed to draw first blood after one hour eight minutes when he took the first set tie-break 7-6 (7/2).

But Djokovic recovered well in the second and gained his revenge with a 7-6 (7/3) win in 65 minutes, despite facing a break at 0-40 down in the second game.

The reigning champion finally recorded the first break of the contest after two hours 52 minutes, and comfortably saw out the third set 6-3, much to the annoyance of the Scot who was unhappy with some outbursts from the crowd.

It proved to be a pivotal moment with US Open champion Murray, who was struggling with blisters on his right foot and a hamstring problem, unable to mount a fightback as Djokovic cruised through the fourth set to etch his name into the history books by becoming the first man in the Open era to win three successive Melbourne crowns.

Djokovic said: ‘I have to congratulate Andy and thank him for the kind words and congratulate him and his team. Played so many thrilling matches in the last three years and hopefully there are many more to come.

‘What a joy, it’s an incredible feeling wining this trophy once more. It’s my favourite Grand Slam, my most successful Grand Slam. It was another fantastic tournament.

‘I want to thank my team for always supporting me and being out there for me. You deserve this trophy as much as I do. I love you and I love the crowd out here.’

A graceful Murray added: ‘Firstly congratulations to Novak. He is a very well deserved champion. Few people have managed to do what he has done.

‘Well done to his team as well. You can’t do these things alone and I know they have been with for a long time. I want to thank my team as well, they have done a great job with me.

‘I also want to thank the crowd, there is a great atmosphere here and you are very fair.’
