KABUL: Top officials from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Britain would meet next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, the foreign ministry announced on Thursday.

Security in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s role in the war on terror would figure prominently at the meeting, scheduled for September 26, the ministry’s deputy spokesman told reporters in Kabul.

Although Faramarz Tamana did not give details, leaders from the three countries had agreed on the formation of a trilateral commission to promote the Afghan-led peace drive at their meeting in Kabul on July 19.

Two months, little progress has been made toward constituting the panel, with a knowledgeable Afghan official accusing Pakistan of evincing no interest in this regard. The agenda for the meeting was yet to be firmed up, he said.

During his recent visit to Islamabad, US Special Envoy Marc Grossman invited President Asif Ali Zardari to attend the three-way talks on the reconciliation effort and cross-border incursions into eastern Kunar province, the source revealed.

Faramarz said a bilateral commission would hold its inaugural session at the end of the current month on the implementation of the Afghan-US Strategic Cooperation Agreement.

Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul would formally express Kabul’s concern at Pakistani rocket strikes into eastern Afghanistan during the UN General Assembly on Sept. 20, he said.

Rassoul would also highlight the negative effects of the attacks on relations between the neighbours, the war on terror and efforts for stabilising Afghanistan, the spokesman added.
