Filminute opens this week, offering movie fans a unique festival: one-minute films from Belgium to Brazil to Israel. Viewers can vote online for their favourite short-short film and a jury will select the top award.

The online festival features 25 one-minute films from around the world, and from now until Sept. 30 viewers can help choose their fave film to win the People’s Choice Award.

Participating countries include Canada, the U.S., the UK, Brazil, Belgium, Israel, Turkey, Germany and many more. Of the 25 films, six are animations and two are documentaries.

Now in its seventh year, Filminute lets anyone watch the 2012 shortlist films online. They range from an unusual take on stealing candy from a baby to a shocking crime-scene story.

A jury selects the winning entry. The jurors include: Sundance & Sarajevo award-winning Romanian film director, Radu Jude; Indian “Ad Guru” and award-winning film lyricist, Prasoon Joshi; FIPRESCI Vice President & Hungarian film critic, György Kárpáti; Shut Up! Cartoons producer and long-time Walt Disney Television Animation Senior Vice-President, Lenora Hume; and award-winning writer and superstar Twitter storyteller Arjun Basu.

The winning film will be announced Oct. 9.

Filminute is also harnessing social media to spread the word about the shortlist and to encourage viewers to vote for the film they enjoyed most.

“We expect social media to continue to play an increasing role in the growth of the festival,” says Filminute co-founder Sabaa Quao. “Not only can filmmakers take direct control over the marketing of their film, the sharing and discussion of the film between the filmmakers and their audiences is a natural marketing driver. Much of what a filmmaker learns to do here is applicable to learning how to better market their feature length projects.”
