What to Do to Prepare for a Disease Outbreak

When many people think about the apocalypse, they think of natural disasters, like hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornados. However, one of the biggest apocalyptic events the world is at risk for a disease outbreak. These have already happened in history with horrible results. The Bubonic Plague, Smallpox, and Cholera are just a few in our history that took millions of lives. A disease outbreak could very easily happen again and, if left unprepared, you may just end up being one of the fatalities. This is why it is so important to learn what you can do to prepare you and your family for an outbreak.

Most people believe that it is not a matter of if a disease outbreak will occur, but more of a when it will occur. While modern technology may seem like it would make things easier, the fact is that it would make things worse. The ability to travel leaves no place on earth immune. Even the remotest parts of the world could be put in danger from a pandemic outbreak.

When a disease outbreak does occur, hospitals, clinics, and doctor’s offices are going to be filled to capacity. Safety staffing is no longer possible as there will be hoards of people needing medical services and not enough people to provide them. What does this mean for the average person who is not prepared? It could mean the end.

For those individuals who prepare for a pandemic outbreak, the risk is much lower. However, preparing for a disease outbreak has to be similar to preparing for life on earth without any type of assistance. You must prepare for it as you would for any type of natural disaster that would leave you without food, water, and electricity.

Some of the things that you can do to prepare for a disease outbreak include:

Stock Up on Food and Water

In the event of a disease outbreak, not only will you not want to wander out in public to go to a store, but you may find many not open due to inadequate staffing. For this reason, you will need to stock up on food and water to get you through this type of event. Some of the best items to stock up on include canned items, such as fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Storing at least a gallon of water per person per day is also essential to you and your family’s safety and health. For more extensive planning, consider preparing by having enough food and water to last your family for at least a 6 month period.

Stock Up Medical Supplies

To adequately prepare for a disease outbreak, it is crucial that you have an emergency medical supply ready. This should include at least a two month supply of prescription medicines, anti-inflammatory medication, fever-reducers, and painkillers. Along with this, your first aid kit should include bandages, thermometers, face masks, and antiseptic cleansers. Furthermore, in a pandemic, it is important to have 3m respirators available to every member in your household. This will prevent you from breathing in germs and spreading them to others.

Be Conscious of Cleanliness

Cleanliness is important when it comes to your health and, during an outbreak, it becomes more important. Be sure that you are stocked up on the essentials, including an alcohol based hand sanitizer. This should not take place of hand washing, but should become routine during a pandemic. Carpets are a breeding ground for bacteria. In such an emergency clean your own carpets. Although carpet cleaners may do a more thorough job they will be bringing the contaminated environment into your home.

Avoid Unnecessary Contact

During an outbreak, it will be very important for you and your family to stay inside and avoid contact with other people as much as possible. If you do have to go out in public, you should keep your distance, at least 6 feet away, from others. More importantly, if you can, avoid all medical facilities, including hospitals and clinics as safety staffing is not possible during this time and you and your family could be at a higher risk for becoming infected. You may also wish to wear 3m respirators whenever you leave your home.

While the Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control carefully monitors for health related emergencies, you need to prepare you and your family for the worst. Cholera and smallpox are just two examples of what can happen. In today’s world, it makes more sense to prepare your family by stocking up on 3m respirators and other emergency supplies. The fact is that a disease outbreak will eventually happen and you must be prepared.
