Last September, I and some colleagues from the U.N. visited the world’s largest particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland – the Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN), popularly known as the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
It is an international organization established in 1954 which aims to boost our understanding of the universe, and study components of matter and forces that hold them together. At CERN, protons are accelerated at roughly the speed of light and collided with protons, which recreate the conditions of the first moments of the universe based on the Big Bang theory. Huge detectors capture these collisions along with the thousands of particles emerging from them.see more
