Tigers Woods fires warning to Rory McIlroy after winning Farmers Insurance Open

Tiger Woods warned Rory McIlroy he has got the Northern Irishman’s world No.1 spot in his sights after winning on his first start of the PGA season.

Woods comfortably topped the final leaderboard by four shots to claim his seventh Farmers Insurance Open title at Torrey Pines’ South Course in California – the scene of the last of his 14 majors wins, the 2008 US Open.

And after lifting his 75th title on the American tour, a buoyant Woods admitted he was ‘excited’ about the year ahead when he hopes to depose McIlroy at the top of the world rankings.

‘That happens through a product of winning golf tournaments,’ said Woods, who last sat on top of the rankings in October 2010.

‘That’s how I got there in the first place, that’s how he [McIlroy] got there. It’s winning golf tournaments, being consistent. Your bad weeks are going to be top-tens and when you win, you win. And you’ve got to be consistently winning. In order for me to get back there, that’s what I have to do, and this is a nice start.’

Woods has been working on a new swing with coach Sean Foley, and after seeing his adjustments bear fruit added: ‘I’m excited about this year.

‘I’m excited about what I was able to do last year and win three times, coming from where I came from. Then I felt really good about the things that we’re doing and how my game was progressing.’

The 37-year-old has won his season-opener six times in the past, and on each occasion has gone on to win at least one major.

However, asked if he’d upped his expectations, he replied: ‘They’re the same. To go out there and win every tournament I play in. That hasn’t changed.

‘I’m the same out there. First tee shot, I’m all go. I’m trying to shoot the lowest score I possibly can. I’m trying to beat everyone in the field, and that hasn’t changed and it won’t change. That’s the mentality I have.’

Woods began the fifth day – needed because of severe fog on Saturday – with a six-shot lead with 11 holes to play.

And despite dropping four shots in his final five holes, his level-par 72 was enough to stay clear of last year’s winner Brandt Snedeker and Josh Teater, who tied for second.

England’s Ross Fisher was the top-placed European, nine shots behind Woods.
