Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address two election rallies in Gujarat on Friday. Before the first phase of voting on December 13, the Prime Minister and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi are also expected to campaign in the state. Sonia Gandhi will speak at a public rally near Gorsamba village in Surat district and then travel to Keshod town of Junagadh district for the second election meeting of the day, party sources said in Ahmedabad.

Both areas will go to poll in the first phase of Assembly election on December 13.

This will be the second poll campaign visit of the UPA Chairperson in the BJP-ruled State. Gandhi had addressed an election rally in Rajkot last month.

On the eve of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s second round of campaigning for Gujarat assembly elections, chief minister Narendra Modi has accused her as also Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of conspiring against farmers.

“Why has the central government not released a single rupee which their Ministers had promised when they visited the state to review the situation created by deficient rain”? Modi said.

In October, the state government had told a visiting team of central ministers that farmers had suffered losses to the tune of Rs. 15,000 crore because of deficient rains.

Modi, who addressed poll rallies at six places in the state, also asked “why is the central government not granting permission to build gates on the Sardar Sarovar Dam? Building 36 gates will take three years and until that’s done, farmers of the state will not get the Narmada water.”

Modi also raised the issues of support price for cotton growers, increase in price of fertilisers, imposition of taxes on income of co-operative banks, higher premium on crop insurances and non-payment of Rs. 5,000 crore to farmers for debt waiver scheme.

“People should demand answers on these issues from Soniaji and the Prime Minister when they come to Gujarat for campaigning,” the BJP stalwart said.

Modi also dared Gandhi to announce her party’s chief ministerial candidate before visiting the poll-bound state.

“It becomes necessary for Sonia to do so after a Gujarat Congress leader (without naming Shankersinh Vaghela dressed in white kurta pyjama) declared that he (Vaghela) was the captain of the team (Congress),” Modi told a huge public meeting in Makarapura area on Thursday night.

He claimed Sonia has been tense for the last 10 days before her Gujarat trip because she found it difficult to prepare the final draft of her speech fearing that any error could come in for criticism.

The chief minister also advised Sonia and Prime Minster Manmohan Singh to do proper homework before making speeches during their visit to the state where polling is scheduled for December 13 and 17.
