“Social Media Impact” on our lives in 2014

A new year has begun, but what has changed or what will change except the digits? The global warming issues will come to an end this year? –Nah, the political turmoil between various states will settle down at last? – Nah, the poverty stricken units of the world will emerge with treasure caskets somehow? – Nah, the wild struggle of defeating the rest in nuclear weapon collection will come to a halt? – Nah! And finally will technology stop throwing wonders our way? – Of course “NAH”.

SO we see, one more year commences with a bucket of promises yet to be fulfilled, and ambiguities still prevail.

Now when it comes to technology and social media, people are often hit with the cognitive bomb made up of three words “Facebook, Twitter And LinkedIn”

What are these forums for?

Many would jump off to this one single answer without doing any thinking i.e. “communication”.

So when we talk of communication that results from this social media networking, it is sheer stupidity to say that the coming times will by any means influence these interactions. Where my only belief is that with the advent of these interactive tools, physical contacts between individuals have shrunk majorly. Ironically kids celebrate more of their parent’s birthdays on Facebook and Twitter by posting statuses and photos rather than enjoying moments in real with them at home.

What will intensify as 2014 advances is not the widespread effect of technology on our lives but the widespread adoption of individuals to the fads these gadgets tend to ignite. Where Facebooking engulfed individuals’ time since 2004, Tweeting followed the lead after two years only with the novel notion of “micro blogging”

Simultaneous efforts by other forums like PINTEREST, TUMBLR, FLICKR, INSTAGRAM and MYSPACE grabbed the remaining market share and soon in flocks these social media instruments became mirrors that reflected every aspect of human life.  One more change that flowed like a wave in the already existing ocean of social media was the new desire to express through visual aids. Pictography’ as commonly referred to, in the academic sector, brought a new dimension to learning. The idea will certainly fine tune in 2014: where traditional learning methods will be replaced on massive level, by these illustrative techniques.

Another expected transformation will occur with reference to facebook. Where originally the platform had its use restricted to virtual socialization only, it has, with the passage of time, opened up new doors to more intellectual aspects.

For instance :
1. allowing marketers to run several contests using their personalized pages meanwhile  Creating brand awareness,
2. letting students enjoy a blend of formal & informal learning by making an online community,
3. providing people with the opportunity to protest against injustices and violence,
4. helping spread awareness relating to more social and political issues.

How in particular will it impact our lives Is a big question! To be very blunt and honest it is possible that it might snatch away more of our time than before. We know how smartphones have replaced the need for a friend; social media might in future replace the complete need for any sort of companionship.

For me the con is very clear. Social media platforms will eliminate the concept of human need for face to face interaction. When clicks can get you sympathies, condolences, fame and information all in micro seconds, why burn calories? A very significant trade off exists:  when a person switches to using technology extensively savoring its benefits, his time disappears as vampires do in sunlight.

2014 will still boom up with unexpected stuff, be ready to witness them….
