Seven Natural Wonders Sure to Amaze

Since the Earth was formed, man has come to know and marvel at its many natural wonders and oddities from the early beginnings of time to present day.  Also created since antiquity are several lists compiled with various versions of the “seven wonders of the world.” Of course, there are hordes of unexplainable, confounding formations located throughout the world. This would explain why the different versions. In fact, some lists include structures like the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus or a combination of nature and manmade constructions like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. However, all lists stop at the number seven, sticking to the Greeks’ belief that seven represents perfection and plenty. Also, many “wonders” have stood the test of time and can consistently be found on most any list. Arguable, natural wonders such as Yosemite National Park are undoubtedly more astounding than anything man-made.  Listed below are seven phenomenal creations worth mentioning.

Mount Everest

Also known as Chomolungma or Sagarmantha, no peak has ever tempted more climbers than that of the world largest mountain, Mount Everest. A peak elevation of 29,035 feet is indeed a sight to behold. Formed over 60 million years ago, Napal’s most famous feature is surrounded by a number of other snow-capped peaks. Aside from the black jumping spider (found at 20,100 feet), the bar-headed goose or the Chough, not much else could survive at such a high altitude.

Grand Canyon

Created by erosion of the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon evolved into a magnificent and vast opening that is 4 to 18 miles wide, over one mile deep and 277 river miles long. With nine archeological excavation sites and a golden orange landscape that will take your breath away, close to five million people journey to the Grand Canyon each year. This canyon has long been recognized as a natural wonder due its overall large scale and unmatched beauty.
Waterton Lakes

Located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains this amazing destination is home to many of the worlds most amazing high altitude lakes. Visitors can experience this place in many ways. Weather you would prefer scaling the high valley walls or taking leisurely sail around the lake there is something for everyone. While the valley is famous for its amazing recreation opportunities However be forewarned, the winds coming off the lake can bring even the hardiest of us running for a hot coffee and the warm fireplace of the Prince of Wale Hotel.
Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means “mist that thunders.” Based upon its width of one mile and height of 360 feet, it is the largest waterfall in the world. Victoria Falls is located along the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. For a more spectacular view, it is best to see the falls during the dry season which runs from May to October. The rainbow can be seen during any time of the day and spray from the falls is visible from 30 miles away.

Yosemite

The central eastern portion of California is home to one of the grandest national parks on the planet. Every year, over 3.7 million people visit this 747,956 acres of land accented by granite cliffs, giant sequoia groves, waterfalls, animals and large selection of flourishing vegetation. Along with having 800 miles of hiking trails, the park is home to three of the world’s 10 highest waterfalls.

Also known as polar auroras, this mystical event’s peak season takes place during Alaska’s coldest and darkest winter months from September to April. The best times for seeing this phenomenon are between 11:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.  Fairbanks is the perfect spot to view frequent displays even though the appearance of these dancing waves of the aurora can be unpredictable. Researchers believe the aurora is caused when the sun’s energy particles collide with the Earth’s magnetic field. The developing rainbow of colors depends upon the kind the atom with the red aurora being the rarest.

Paricutin Volcano

All volcanos are undeniably fascinating creations. However, what makes Michoacan, Mexico’s Paricutin volcano a natural wonder is the fact that its birth was witnessed by mankind. Dormant since 1952, this cinder cone volcano is also fast growing. It is part of the Ring of Fire, an area where numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have occurred within the basin of the Pacific Ocean. The Paricutin is believed to be monogenetic, meaning there is only one eruption.
