The Afghan Senate on Tuesday urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to contact the Emirati officials and locate the missing Taliban leader Agha Jan Mutasim.

While debating on the mysterious disappearance of Agha Jan Mutasim, who played key role in peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan government, the senators said the foreign ministry must contact the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to find out about the missing Taliban leader.

Ali Akbar Jamshedi, member of the Defense Committee of the Upper House, urged the Afghan foreign minister to ask the UAE through diplomatic channels for information regarding missing of Agha Jan.

He called Agha Jan as an important figure for facilitating peace talks between Afghan Taliban and Afghan administration. The senator added that missing of Mutasim shows that regional intelligence agencies are playing dangerous games to bring one party (Taliban) under control so they could disrupt the Afghan peace drive. “It is duty of the UAE to provide security to such important people who are facilitating the reconciliation process. The foreign minister shall seriously follow the case through diplomatic ways,” he told the Upper House.

Amanullah, another senator, pictured Mutasim as a moderate person who facilitated the Afghan-owned peace process.

He said, “Anyone that facilitates peace talks is either killed or kidnapped by Pakistan, but this time the UAE also has joined Pakistani government. Pakistan has killed some moderate Taliban who wanted to be part of the peace talks.”

Hedayatullah Rehaiee, a senator from Bamyan, said that it was unclear that whether Mutasim was facilitating the negotiations process on behalf of the Taliban or had no support of the insurgent group.

Senate Chairman, Fazal Hadi Muslimyar, termed disappearing of Mutasim in the UAE intolerable. He said the Afghan foreign minister must be asked to clarify that how Agha Jan has gone to the UAE and has he got permission from the Afghan government.

Muslimyar directed the International Relations Committee (IRC) of the Senate to follow the case along with the foreign minister.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan has already asked the United Arab Emirates to tell about mysterious disappearance of Mutasim Agha Jan, as in the UAE security is much tighter and it is almost impossible for a person to go missing.

Meanwhile, the High Peace Council officials said that Mutasim was playing important role in the Afghan-led peace process.
