According to a new study from Smart Politics, a project by the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, reviewed Palin’s 150 Fox News appearances from 2010 to 2012 and determined she spoke 189,221 words during her now-expired contract. Using published reports that the former Alaska governor was paid about $1 million a year by Fox News, Smart Politics determined the per word earnings, the Daily record reports. Taken together, that averages out to about $15.85 per word, according to the report; more than twice the federal minimum wage for working a whole hour, MSN noted. The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee did not have a regular program of her own on Fox News, like 2008 GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, the Plain Dealer writes.
Instead, Humphrey’s Eric Ostermeir notes that Palin “appeared on the network in studio, by satellite, by telephone, or in a pre-taped interview an average of once every 7.2 days during this three-year period…” but could go weeks without making an appearance. It was revealed on Friday that the cable network would not renew its pact with the former GOP vice presidential candidate. According to the Smart Politics report, the University of Idaho journalism graduate, not surprisingly, discussed President Obama by name 786 times on Fox over the run of her contract; she said “heck” 28 times, “darn” nine times, “hell” seven times, and “damn” twice, the report said. She mentioned “God” 57 times and “Amen” 111 times. And the biggest surprise? The report says that Palin said her signature phrase “you betcha” just twice as a Fox News commentator.
