SAMSUNG is hoping to win over the hearts, minds and wallets of budding Australian photographers with a combination of speed and an extra dimension.

The Korean technology company today launched its new compact system camera, the 20.3 megapixel NX300, which will let people take family happy snaps and holiday videos in 3D.

And to emphasise the speed of the camera, which can autofocus in 0.8 seconds, shoot 8.6 full-resolution images a second and has a top shutter speed of 1/6000th of a second, Samsung have signed up Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, as the camera’s ambassador in a marketing campaign.

The camera comes with a 18-55 zoom lens for $899 but the range of optional lenses include the NX 45mm F1.8 ($499) which Samsung calls the world’s first one-lens 3D system capable of capturing both still images and full HD movies.”
The lens functions as a standard 45mm lens until you flick a switch, engaging a second prism within the lens. The two lens combine to produce the 3D images which can be viewed using 3D glasses.

With a rising marketshare for compact system cameras, which offer the benefits of a DSLR but the size of a compact camera, Samsung is hoping for big things for the NX300 which was unveiled on the world stage at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Appealing to those who find the traditional PASM modes (program, aperture priority, shutter priority, manual) of a DSLR too complicated, the NX300 has iFucntion, which simplifies settings such as controlling depth of field without needing to understand aperture settings.

The NX300 has a retro look and comes in either brown or white. It has NFC (near field communication) and wifi, appealing to those people who are used to sharing their photos from their smartphones straight to social media.

Craig Gillespie, Head of Digital Imaging for Samsung Australia, said compact system cameras had 9 percent of the Australian camera market.

Mr Gillespie said the NX300 “now represents a true challenge” to a full DSLR camera.
