Samsung Galaxy S5 rumored to feature carbon fibre body and more

Not even a year since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and while the Galaxy S4 Mini is still making its way to the market, it looks like Samsung is going ahead with plans to launch the Galaxy S5 estimated somewhere between Q3 and December.

Since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 in April 2013, a recent report claimed the Korean based company sold 20 million units of the smartphone making it the fastest selling Android device ever.

Meanwhile, like its S3 predecessor, the S4 also introduced the ‘Mini‘ series providing a scaled down solution for those interested. While the Galaxy S4 Mini unboxing videos and reviews start filling up the internet, the Galaxy S5 has already been rumored to be launched by the end of this year for the Christmas holiday rush.

More and more phone manufacturers have switched over to aluminum casing bodies, Samsung has yet to make this change. They have been criticized with the S4 for keeping the same flimsy plastic casing that provides the “cheap” feeling rather than the elegance of brushed aluminum. Have no fear because Samsung is responding.

Although Samsung may not introduce aluminum casing, that does not mean they do not have something else planned. Samsung recently purchased half the shares of SGL Group, the world’s leading manufacturer for carbon based products. This hints that Samsung’s Galaxy S5 will most likely feature a carbon fiber body. A jointstatement has been released by the two companies detailing the following:

The cooperation is expected to provide a stable long-term supply of carbon fibre materials for Samsung and promote its use in various Samsung products and applications such as consumer electronics, medical devices and engineering applications

The other reason for the carbon fiber over aluminum is to maintain the lightweight design and structure. Samsung opted-out of aluminum and stuck with plastic with the current S4 for this purpose. Plastic, despite the ‘cheap’ feeling, weighs less than aluminum and Yoosung Chung, CEO of Samsung Petrochemicals, stated the importance of lightweight materials when it comes to consumer electronics.

Furthermore, not only does carbon fiber produce a more lightweight design, it also makes the device more shock resistive and scratch proof acting on the durability of the device as well.

One possible disadvantage for such change will mean the loss of the removable casing for the battery compartment, making it a costlier choice replace the phone’s battery. Also, a removable battery also allows for custom modifications. Third party companies such as Mugen Power offers custom batteries boosting the battery life per charge considerably allowing power users to get more out of their devices.

As for the rumored 5G connectivity, it does not seem likely that Samsung is ahead of the predicted release scheduled for 2020. The seven year difference is by far too good to be true and current cell networks lack the ability to support such a technology. Furthermore, there are strong opinions stating that the 5G network will never work.
