MANILA, Philippines—Nora Aunor won a critics award from an independent award-giving body in Venice for her lead performance in “Sinapupunan” (“Thy Womb”).
The multi-awarded Filipina actress was given the Bisato d’Oro critics award Friday for her portrayal of a Badjao midwife who cannot conceive and lets her husband find a second wife who can give him a child.
Aunor, who is in the northeast Italian  city together with “Thy Womb” director Brillante Mendoza and actresses Lovi Poe and Mercedes Cabral, is competing for the best actress prize at the Venice International Film Festival, the world’s oldest film festival.
The actress, who has appeared in more than 170 films, is the first Filipina to receive the Italian critics award.
