New York City Tells Couples to Take Their ‘Love Locks’ Somewhere Else

A “love lock” can be a beautifully symbolic, semi-permanent gesture for showing your significant other how much you care. But for New York City transportation officials, showing your love should not mean destroying your environment.

A trend that has marked many major cities, but is especially common on the Ponts des Arts in Paris, has become a nuisance for the New York City Department of Transportation. Padlocks with short messages of undying love, or the names of people’s soulmates, have begun to line New York City bridges.

Beyond just being an eyesore, attaching padlocks are also considered graffiti. Every lovestruck couple’s expression of everlasting romance also comes with the cost of removing their public display of affection, plus potential repairs and paint touch-ups.

The Brooklyn Bridge’s Facebook page has begun to discourage New Yorkers and tourists alike by getting the word out about the illegal status of “love locks,” saying locks cause hazards for motorists below the bridge and can cause corrosion over time. check complete story
