Nasa’s Curiosity rover has posted its first picture of planet Earth shining brighter than any other star in the Martian sky – from millions of miles away.

The robot’s photos have even captured the moon which can be spotted just below its home planet.

The images were taken about 80 minutes after sunset on day 529 of its expedition to Mars.

The distance between Earth and Mars when Curiosity took the photo was about 99 million miles.

Nasa’s Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to see if there are signs there was ever life on Mars.

It is hoped the explorer will help scientists understand how Mars changed from a watery world to a dusty planet.

Curosity has been exploring the planet since August 2011 and has made several discoveries to support the theory that Mars was once able to support life.
