President Hamid Karzai has said the Taliban leader Mullah Omar can nominate himself as a candidate for Afghanistan’s upcoming presidential election in 2014, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported Monday.

In an interview with the newspaper, Karzai asked the Taliban to stop waging violence in Afghanistan, while also objecting to the West’s policies in the fight against the insurgency. He said Pakistan was a key issue behind the crisis in his country.

“The West has done nothing to destroy areas where insurgents hide, and has not destroyed their training camps,” he was quoted as saying.

Karzai also on called the Taliban leader to consider nominating himself as a candidate for president.

“Mullah Omar, leader of the Taliban, can be a candidate for the 2014 presidential election. He can give Afghans the options to vote for or against him,” Karzai said.

Criticising Nato’s mission in Afghanistan again, Karzai accused the West of carrying out misguided actions towards the Afghan government.
