Japan mobile operator NTT Docomo‘s planned new smartphone operating system that will challenge the Anrdoid and iOs platforms will just have to wait a little longer to take on the mobile world. Due to development delays, the open source system called Tizen will not be able to make its debut as originally planned.

The upcoming new platform is a result of a consortium of companies like Docomo and Fujitsu from Japan, China’s Huawei, South Korea’sSamsung and LG, European mobile operators Vodafone and Orange and the United States’s Intel and is based on the popular Linux operating system. Docomo President Kaoru Kato originally wanted it to launch by the end of the current fiscal year in March. But company spokesman Jun Otori said that they decided to push it back to a later date because they are still in the process of developing products and applications that can “maximize the features of the Tizen.”

Docomo claims that unlike Android and iOs, which is used by 90% of the smartphone market, the new platform allows them to create products more freely since it is an open source system. The consortium is planning to install Tizen in new smartphones that will be sold by the time it finishes the development stage. They will have a tough task of trying to make a dent in the market share as other platforms like Blackberry and Microsoft’s Windows Phone have to grab the remaining 10%. Several phones using open source systems like Linux and Mozilla’s Firefox are expected to launch in emerging markets this year as well.
