Several businessmen have opposed the move to reduce weekly working hours in the private sector from 48 to 40 hours, saying it would have a negative impact on the economy. They said the move would increase the sector’s economic burden by 33 percent.
Abdul Rahman Al-Rashid, president of the Asharqia Chamber, proposed reducing weekly working hours from 48 to 45 hours instead of 40. He also called for a study to assess the economic impact of reducing working hours to 40 hours a week.
Al-Rashid’s statement comes at a time when the Shoura Council has decided to review its previous resolution approving a 40-hour, two-day weekend.
Some GCC countries, which have adopted the two-day weekend, are still sticking to 48 hours distributed throughout the whole week. Eight million foreign workers are currently employed by the private sector.
“Things should not be considered in haste,” Al-Rashid said, refuting findings that long working hours is the main factor that discourages Saudis from working in the private sector. “I can tell you that many Saudis are now working in companies that follow the 48-hour system.”.. see more
