KSA: New 5-year expatriate ID from Oct. 15

JEDDAH: The Passports Department has announced that it would start issuing new resident permits with a five-year lifespan for expatriates from next week, Oct. 15, the first day of the Islamic new year. Companies and expatriates would have to renew them yearly online, with no need to visit the offices of the department. Delivery of renewed cards would be done by courier, according to a report.

The old cards would be replaced if they are renewed, if a transfer of sponsorship takes place, or one is issued for the first time, said the report in a local daily. The old card would only be operational for one year. The new cards can be renewed electronically through the Abshir or Muqeem services.

They would have magnetic strips to prevent forgery, have no expiry date on them, and have ‘resident identity’ replacing the word ‘iqama.’ The same fees apply annually.
