The Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday has urged the US to hand over all the Afghan detainees from Guantanamo prison.

“President Hamid Karzai welcomed the US President Barack Obama’s efforts to close the Guantanamo prison and transfer all the Afghan detainees to their country,” Karzai’s office said in a statement.

“President Karzai, in an effort to live up to the expectations of his people, requested the transfer of the Afghan prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to Afghanistan soon,” Karzai’s Deputy Spokesman, Fayeq Wahidi told TOLOnews.

Karzai’s comment comes in after the US President had called on the Congress to close Guantanamo Bay last week. Obama encouraged the use of diplomatic power to address the issue of terrorism originating from the region.

Obama called on the Congress to end the laws they passed, restricting the administration from moving the 166 captives who are held in the US jail for allegedly promoting terrorism in Cuba.

Karzai had previously urged the US officials to hand over the Afghan detainees in Guantanamo prison.

Meanwhile, General Nurul Haq Ulumi, an Afghan political expert has criticised Karzai’s comment about the transfer of the Afghan detainees and accused him of supporting the insurgents.

“Consciously or unconsciously in view of patriotism, it is a support being given out to terrorism and it is dangerous for the country,” General Nurul Haq Ulumi told TOLOnews.

The US military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, has been used to detain insurgents since the start of the US-led war in Afghanistan.

The Taliban had said that along with the office in Qatar, it sought the release of Taliban detainees held at the American military prison in Guantánamo Bay.

The Afghan government has been pushing hard to get the Taliban negotiate a peace deal before the end of 2014.
