Job ads for internet porn watchdogs in China receive thousands of applications

ANYONE who’s ever looked for a job has come across job listings that seem too good to be true.
For example, a job that promises to pay $32,000 per year just for watching porn will probably come with a catch. That’s what China’s new internet porn watchdogs are finding out.
Over 4000 Chinese citizens have applied for positions as porn watchdogs. The jobs were created so that internet companies can comply with the latest internet restrictions referred to as the “Clean internet Campaign 2014.” Those selected as watchdogs, any male or female between twenty and thirty-five-years-old, must evaluate pictures, videos or any erotic or sexually suggestive content to determine if they break the new laws.
If you think that sounds like a great deal, many watchdogs say that the job is a lot worse than it may initially sound. Liu Chunqui, a police officer who works as a watchdog, said, “When I do the appraisal, all I am thinking about is whether the content meets the standards for sexual content.” He added that “some people think it’s just watching porn, but it’s not. Sometimes it makes me throw up.”
Chunqui didn’t elaborate, but the restrictions don’t just apply to graphic images. Images of women in bikinis can be illegal if they are deemed to be an attack on public morals. Those vague guidelines can put a lot of pressure on watchdogs, since companies face massive fines for noncompliance. Sina (basically China’s Twitter) was recently fined over $800,000 for posting “unhealthy and indecent content.”
We doubt that the 4000 applicants are just porn fans hoping to see as much as they can before it’s removed. $32,000 per year probably provides plenty motivation for many people. But when you think about it, maybe that’s not enough. Spending eight hours per day being forced to search for all types of porn sounds dreadful. Throw in a boss who’s panicking that you’re not watching enough because he faces an $800,000 fine, and it’s basically torture.
This porn watchdog job is basically the equivalent of a job listing on Craigslist offering to pay $5000 per week while working from home. It might sound good at first, but you know something is wrong with it.
