A day after a Congress MP from Gujarat was booked for brandishing a gun at a toll plaza, a BJP youth wing leader in Uttar Pradesh allegedly shot at a waiter in a Kanpur hotel after food was not served to him in his vehicle. Virat Vikram Singh Bhadauria, BJP’s youth wing vice-president of Kanpur (south), was allegedly inebriated and with two equally drunk associates when he shot at Vijay Kumar around 1.15am on Saturday, police said.

BJP district convenor Surendra Maithani claimed Bhadauria was thrown out of the party three months ago for “anti-party activities”, but the top BJP leadership in UP could not confirm this.

Police have arrested Bhadauria and his associates, Pankaj Katiyar and Amit Singh, for the trigger-happy act.

The trio has been booked for attempt to murder, possession of illegal arms and under the Motor Vehicles Act — for fitting a police siren in the vehicle — among other charges.

Kumar, who works at Nilam Hotel, was hit in the chest. His condition is stated to be critical.

Rahul Dixit, the hotel’s owner, said, “He (Bhadauria) was targeting me, but I ducked. Unfortunately, Kumar was hit.”
