A young hitchhiker was recently picked up from the side of the road by a good Samaritan, however this good Samaritan also happens to be one of the most powerful people in South America.

Gerhald Acosta was walking back from work near Juan Lacaze in Uruguay last week when the President of Uruguay Jose Mujica stopped to pick him up in his iconic 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.

Acosta told El Observador newspaper that upon entering the car he instantly recognised the president’s wife, Sen. Lucia Topolansky, before it dawned on him that he was hitching a ride with the president himself.

A shocked Gerhald said: ‘I couldn’t believe it. The president was giving me a ride.

‘When I got out, I thanked them profusely, because not everyone helps someone out on the road, and much less a president.’

Gerhald even managed to get a picture of the president while he was enjoying the ride.

Fans of President Mujica, who is often dubbed ‘the world’s humblest president’, will not be surprised by this gesture, as Uruguay’s head of state has gained worldwide recognition for his habits that stand in stark contrast with other world leaders.

He donates 90 per cent of his salary to homeless charities, opted to live on his small farm with his wife instead of the lavish presidential palace, and only drives his battered old Beetle which is worth about $1800 (£1188).

He also has a three legged dog, is pro women and gay rights, and considers himself and atheist.

Remember – hitchhiking can be dangerous, and it’s unlikely you will ever be picked up by a world leader, so be careful!…
