Here’s what your eyes reveal about your health

Ophthalmologists (eye docs) can tell a lot about your health by looking at the retina of your eyes.

We’re talking everything from the diagnosis of eye diseases like glaucoma and cataracts through to illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and liver disease.

And that’s why having an eye test on the regular is so important.

Here’s a few symptoms and what they might mean courtesy of Huffington Post.

Redness of the eye and/or sensitivity to light? This could translate as inflammation in the uvea, the middle part of your eye.

According to Emily Graubart, MD, an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Emory Eye Center, this ‘can be related to a systemic issue where the body’s own immune system is attacking itself’.

Uveitis affects the front of the eye, and if you are suffering from the above then make an appointment to see your doctor.

Really dry eyes? This can be down to simply not blinking enough, or even allergies but worst case scenario it could be linked to Sjögren’s syndrome which causes white blood cells to attack the glands that produce moisture in the bod

Watery eyes? Potentially a result of blocked tear ducts, dust, wind, allergies, infection or injury. Watery eyes normally clear themselves up but if this becomes a chronic problem seek some advice.

Fluid build-up under your retina? This could be linked to stress, and symptoms include eyesight changes like blurriness and partial loss of vision. Have a check-up.

Proof and case that your eyes are windows to the soul.

‘[Eyes are] the only place in the body where you can see a bare nerve, a bare artery, and a bare vein without doing any cutting’ says Andrew Iwach, MD, associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco.
